Buying a Convenience Store Franchise
Posted Under: Franchising
With more and more large companies downsizing, its not surprising that more people are seriously considering buying into a franchises like convenience store franchises. Unlike owning a small independent business, franchises offer a much needed increased degree of job security. As with any other investment, it is up to you to do the necessary research. So to help you, here are some questions to ask yourself before buying into a franchise.
How much intellectual stimulation do you need in your work? The majority of franchises on offer in the market today are either retail or service businesses, that require little in the way of education and sophistication. While there are a growing number of professional franchises such as executive coaches, if you have a MBA or a law degree, chances are you may get bored after two years of running a franchise.
How do you feel about being in the same place? Typically when you buy into a franchise, for example convenience store franchises, you tend to be limited to one territory and are forbidden from opening a unit or even advertising in another area. So if you enjoy moving around or like frequent changes in your career, you may want to reconsider. However if this doesn’t bother you, make sure you know the area you choose, very well. An idea would be to consider moving back to the community where you grew up or perhaps to the area you wish to retire in.
The next two questions may seen obvious, but they are important none-the-less. Do you have other important priorities in your life? In just about every franchise agreement there is a clause requiring you to devote a substantial amount of your time to the operation of the franchise. So if you have a devoted hobby or need to spend more time with your family, you will probably need to reconsider whether opening a franchise is right for you. The other seemingly obvious, question you need to ask yourself is, how do you feel about dealing with the public? As is the nature of most franchises, like convenience store franchises, you will probably have to deal with the public on an everyday basis. Are you going to be able to deal with people who are rude, demanding and sometimes even vicious, without taking it personally?
