Will marriage-counseling work for my marriage?
Unfortunately, marital therapy does not work in every case. In some situations, marital couples seek counseling after many, many years of marital discord and the pain and hurt that each partner feels runs too deep to be resolved. However, the good news is that marital counseling does help in the majority of cases. A recent study in a leading consumer magazine clearly indicates that a large majority of couples undergoing marital therapy experience a marked improvement in their relationship.Basically, marriage education is teaching people healthy relationship skills. Unlike counseling, it doesn’t focus on discussing specific problems or situations. Instead, it focuses on giving people knowledge about what makes relationships successful, and having them practice skills that can make a difference in their own relationship.

What are your fees?
I currently charge $190.00 for Individual sessions (fifty-minute sessions). Initial Appointments, Couple’s and Family Therapy sessions are $225.00 (sixty-minute sessions).No, marriage counseling is not family psychotherapy as represented by CPT codes 90846 and 90847. What is your therapeutic approach?
I variously practice: Structural-strategic therapy, experiential therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, Bowenian therapy, and psychodynamic therapy (for long-term work) depending upon my client’s individual needs. I do whatever works.I do not require pre-marriage counseling. How come you are not on a lot of managed care provider panels?
I am not on many managed care provider panels, and tend to strongly disagree with many managed care policies. Most often, effective therapy does not accompany rigid timetables –each family, couple, and individual is unique, and deserves treatment appropriate to their needs. They also reimburse quite poorly. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, confidentiality is (at best) compromised, and (usually) disregarded altogether. Computers tend to have a lot of memory.Classic marriage counseling focuses on finding problems in order to fix them. Unfortunately, this approach has not worked for marriage in the last 40 years.
