Is A Gasifier The Newest Alternative Power Source?
Posted Under: Renewable Energy
A mechanical device called a gasifyer is used to heat wood chips, or other organic matter, and liberate the combustible material within. Once liberated the gasses can either be burned for heat or combusted in an engine to produce energy. The gasifier is fundamentally a container that is insulated to keep in the heat.
The container has within it a bed of burning fuel. The bed of fuel is forced to burn under controlled conditions, by limiting the amount of air, and starts the gas production.
This makes the whole operation self contained.
This small controlled fire is precisely what is needed to allow the gasses to be liberated uniformly. This heat is used to dry and heat up the fuel stock, so that when it falls into the fire grate, it will willingly burn. Realistically the fire should reach roughly 1200 degrees F. The hot unburned gasses are allowed to escape from the top of the container. They then require to be cooled and filtered, partly to scrub the gas, in particular if it is to be used in an engine, and cooled to produce a denser mixture which is more thermally efficient.
A small power station, transportable and self contained, is one of the distinct advantages of the gasifier. A four cylinder engine needs an oil drum sized gas producer, but if the fuel is a waste product, the gas is just as good.
Any combination of chipped wood and or branches, rice or corn husks, shells, pits, animal droppings, in truth any waste natural material, could be used. In some parts a fuel crop such as a fast growing willow may be used.
Using commercial agricultural waste as a fuel will not just save money, but also massive amounts of landfill space. The gasifyer residue, or char, is an excellent soil conditioner, making it a very eco-friendly alternative.
A large industrial gasifier may have to be used in an area heating project or in a large farm yard waste energy producer in order to acquire economies of scale.
My specialty is more with the use of a gasifyer to cut house hold expenses and or off grid living.
The end result with home gasification is a clean burning fuel with little pollution. An additional advantage.
20lbs of dry chipped wood is said by many to be equal to 1 gallon of gasolene. A gasifier of suitable size will provide all the gas to run a selected engine, the bigger the gasifier the bigger the engine. A gasifyer does not necessarily call for any external power nevertheless this will help to start the machine, someone will still have to fuel the machine. With an internal combustion engine the inductance will drag air through the hearth creating a self sustaining cycle.Check Out The Gasifyer.com
