Is the phone slowly becoming a past thing?

Surely the internet and e-mail is not pusing the telephone into the giant trashcan that holds the other pieces of technology we no longer have use for? As well as this would people rather e-mail somebody rather than sit waiting for someone to answer a 0800 number?
No matter how you look at it the phone over the years has certainly been pushed aside by the internet. Under no circumstances does this mean that it isn't important. Without the invention of the telephone the internet would not have been possible making the phone one of the most important inventions in human history.
Many people of course do still not have the internet or broadband meaning that without the phone it would make it very hard for someone to buy something. There are of course still many people who still like to speak to somebody at the end of a phone as it seems like a more genuine form of communicating. Of course it is possible to scam people out of thier money over the phone it is done a lot more frequently on the internet especially in the means of a e-mail.
There are many companies that wouldn't survive without a phone, surely something like a loan needs to be spoken about either in person or over the phone. There are of course many people who do not want to take a loan out with one of the main banks but will search online but of course what can they do if they see something they do not understand if there is no phone to ring. Some companies will word the way they describe things on thier websites to make it sound like it is a lot better than it is. This is much harder to do via a phone as you could ask them anything you wan't about the product rather than being stuck to what you are reading on a site.
The phone still plays a vital part in any business and what with newer products available like the 0871 numbers that are designed to make life that bit easier for the customer the phone is certainly not going down without a fight, but with inventions like Skype it is difficult to see the future for the telephone.
